CHAPTER 2

Alex felt rather pleased with herself, pleasantly buzzed and extremely turned on. The cab dropped her off at the apartment for an early night. It was only two in the morning, but Alex considered it early enough. The night had been a swirl of vodka cocktails, dancing to electronica, and meeting a flowery girl of nineteen. The dainty morsel had caught Alex’s attention walking into the club. Alex fawned on her for most of the evening before making her move.

Alex still felt the aftershocks and excitement of the last few hours, yet she was not fully sated. Fortunately, Sara would be home Alex thought as her key slid home. The house was dark. Alex turned on the light and headed for the bedroom. She found Sara, alone, under the covers. At first she was disappointed, assuming Sara had already fallen asleep. But a sudden shift brought Sara upright.

“You’re home early.” Sara seemed a bit despondent. “What happened?”

“I was missing you, babe. You sooo should have come tonight. We would have had a great time.” Alex was unaware of her words slightly slurring. “I would have made you come, too.”

“I know you would.” Sara smiled wryly, half playing along with Alex. “I just wasn’t in the mood and didn’t want to spoil your fun.”

“My fun? You should be a part of my fun. Besides, you would have loved this girl. She was sooo your type.”

“Oh.” Sara seemed a bit crestfallen. “You know, how about we spend tomorrow together? Just us. Like it used to be.”

Alex’s mind spun like a top, twisted with alcohol and a surging libido. She had all but lost interest in keeping the charade up. These days she didn’t really consider Sara her girlfriend until there was nobody else around to play with— like now.

“Uh, sure,” Alex said finally. “What do you want to do?” She knew the proper thing would be to break it off with Sara. But the last few months had proven strenuous for them both, and the rough patch had hit Sara especially hard. She was smoking too much, not going to work, and generally moping about.

“I just want to spend time with you,” Sara said. “I love you. I don’t care what we do, as long as it’s together.”

“Okay. Well, how about we, uh, go to the movies?” Alex offered, trying to make it sound a little less like a date. “That new zombie movie’s out.”

“Well, it’s not overly romantic, but sounds fun.” Sara lit up a little. “What about the rest of the day? What do you want to do?”

“Uh, well, we could go shopping.” Alex tried to come up with something. “We could do dinner?”

“Are you just trying to placate me?” Sara said suddenly, a hint of aggression in her voice. “It doesn’t seem like you ever want to do things with me anymore, but now you do?”

“Woah, no, it isn’t that at all. I’ve just been, er, busy with school.” Alex tried to defend herself without causing a fight. “Plus, it’s been too dreary lately to go out and do stuff.
